Feelin’ Venice

Continuing from Johana and my story in Spain, on the 8th of this month, we flew into Venice, Italy. We booked a beautiful Airbnb and planned to do nothing more than enjoy the city while we prepared for the next step in our journey.

We could have chosen to go anywhere in the world when we left Spain. We chose Venice because we had friends nearby whom we both wanted to visit again, and because it seemed like the perfect place to spend a few romantic nights. Venice was as magical as you’d expect—beautiful canals, stone streets, charming restaurants, and stores. Being November, it was also quite cold outside, which meant fewer tourists. All of this together was the perfect cocktail for the romantic nights we had hoped for when we came here. It was dreamy walking the cold Venetian streets together at night, taking respite from the chill inside some cozy restaurant, drinking Aperol Spritz, and enjoying all the wonderful Italian food.

The food was easily the best part of the entire visit for us… it’s Italy, so plenty of pasta, pizza, tiramisu, limoncello, and gelato— all of which were the best we’d ever had. The grocery stores, especially, were filled to the roof with things we had to try. We’ve never had better breakfasts together; everything tasted so good. A special mention to the first restaurant we visited—our waiter, Mohammad, was out of this world, haha.

Of course, while we were here, we also visited some of our friends that we had met back in Germany last year. For an entire day, we all explored the city together, goofing around and reconnecting after so long apart.

Our plan for the future is that in 2028, once everyone has graduated from university, we will all go visit Uruguay together. Hopefully, we will get a chance to meet before then. But until then, good luck to everyone in their studies.

Our Next Step

We had a lot of time to figure out what we wanted to do after Spain didn’t go as we had imagined. Our first idea was to look for work in the Alps. Ski resorts across Europe had to be looking for people for the start of the season in December. Back in Lloret de Mar, we spent quite some time updating our resumes and writing emails to a bunch of resorts. A few leads got back to us, and we chose the one that seemed the most convincing. It was a hard choice, as we had to turn down other great opportunities.

So, here we are now, in the French Alps, with a 5-month contract, and part of a large international team helping to run this place. As of writing this, we officially start tomorrow. Everyone we’ve met so far seems great, and I have a good feeling about this place. It’s going to be a busy season, with lots of work ahead for both of us.
